Description:

This a very nice example of early Colt US Army contract Model 1911 pistol as manufactured in the end of 1914. This is a complete WWI era rig that has a green Mills marked web belt, original Russell two pocket spare magazine pouch, 1917 dated US Army leather holster and an original 1917 trench knife was manufactured by the LF & C company. The pistol as noted was made towards the end of 1914 and is one of 600 pistols shipped to the Commanding Officer of Rock Island Arsenal on August 26 1914. The left side of the slide is marked with the two line, two block 1897-1913 patent dates and address, with the Colt Rampant Horse behind the serrations, with the right side of the slide marked "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY". The left side of the frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY", with the small circle "WGP" inspection mark of Major Walter G. Penfield, the US Army Ordnance inspector. The right side of the frame is marked with only the serial number "No92824". It is fitted with the correct WWI Colt barrel marked with the separated "P" and "H" proofs on top of the barrel. The rear section of the slide has a small letter "H" above the firing pin stop. It has the correct 1914 pattern thick thumb safety with the flat mainspring housing with the lanyard ring on the bottom. It has the short horned grip safety with the wide spur checkered Colt hammer, with the checkered slide stop. The pistol is fitted with a set of original diamond pattern, checkered walnut grips and is complete with early style half-tone magazine with lanyard loop on the base plate. The accessories that accompany this pistol is an early green pattern web belt that is marked on the brass keeper: "MADE BY MILLS WOVEN CARTRIDGE BELT CO. WORCHESTER MASS.". This rig is also complete with the following original accessories, an original WWI US Army leather holster that is marked on the back "G&K/1917/F.T."; an original WWI tan canvas double pocket magazine pouch, marked under the flap, "NOV./Russell/1914", a Brodie helmet and an original 1917 pattern trench or knuckle knife. This version has the stamped knuckle guard with seven diamonds on the guard with the original wooden handle and original green leather scabbard. The knife has the triangular shaped blade that was later forbidden under the Geneva convention rules of war. The Guard is marked "U.S./LF&C/1917.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 85% plus of the original blue finish with thinning and browning on the front grip strap, with blue loss on the mainspring housing and front ends of the frame extension, with thinning on top of the slide itself. The markings are all clear and sharp. The walnut grips are also in excellent condition overall with nice sharp checkering on both sides with only some minor nicks in a couple of places with a few minor light handling marks on the lower grips themselves. The pistol is all original and unaltered. The Mills web belt is in excellent condition with a nice original light green color with no noticeable fraying of the canvas. The leather holster is in very good condition with clear markings on the back side and tight stitching overall but showing heavy wear on the flap and front of the holster. The double pocket magazine pouch is also in excellent condition with nice clear sharp markings with some very minor wear starting to show at the bottom of the pouch and edges of the flap with tight stitching overall. The Brodie helmet is very fine with the liner and chin strap remaining solid and most of the textured paint remaining. The 1917 trench knife is also in excellent condition with only minor handling marks on the wooden handle with 95% of the original blue on the blade with a slight drag line down the center of the blade from the scabbard. The scabbard is also in near excellent condition with 95% of the green color still on the leather scabbard with the blued throat and metal tip having completely browned out. Overall this is just a super example of a complete, early WWI Model 1911 pistol and belt rig. Excellent display piece for the WWI or martial arms collector.
