Description:

This is a very fine, documented example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action .45-70 Rifle that was manufactured in 1893. The top barrel flat ahead of the rear sight is marked "MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" and "45-70" at the breech. The 1884 and '85 patent dates and the serial number are marked on the lower tang. The barrel is equipped with a dovetailed German blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards. Blue barrel, magazine tube and bolt, with casehardened finish on the remaining metal surfaces, full magazine tube and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a steel end cap and crescent buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger, that it was received in the warehouse on April 22, 1893 and shipped on order number 11165, March 24, 1894.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The magazine and barrel retain 70% original thin blue finish with a smooth brown patina on the balance. The receiver and hammer retain 60% original case colors, very bright on the lower tang, the lever retains 70% and the buttplate has a smooth gray patina. The wood is also very fine with almost all of the original finish remaining and showing some scattered minor dings and scratches. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
