A) U.S. Johnson Contract Model 1842 Percussion Pistol

Description:

Marked "US/I.N. JOHNSON" on the lock plate in front of the hammer, "MIDDTN/CONN/1853" vertically at the rear. The tang is unmarked and part of the "US" is visible over "JCB/P", with "STEEL" and "B" on the left flat. Brass mountings, blade front sight, swivel type steel ramrod with a button shaped hollow head and mounted with a one piece walnut stock. Approximately 10,000 of these pistols were manufactured between 1853-1855.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The metal surfaces have been cleaned and remain bright with flash pitting on the hammer, bolster and barrel. The brass has a mellow aged patina. The stock has been sanded and refinished, and remains very good with a minor crack ahead of the rear left side plate screw and a few scattered minor dents and dings. Unless noted above the markings are clear. The action is very good.

Description:

This pistol has a smoothbore barrel with a swivel, button head ramrod. The trigger guard, buttcap and barrel band/side plate are brass. The trigger was finished blue and the remaining surfaces bright. The lock plate is stamped "US/H.ASTON" in front of the hammer and "MIDDtn/CONN./1847" vertically behind the hammer. The barrel tang is undated and the left side, breech end of the barrel is marked "JH/P" with the letter "W" on the left rear barrel flat. Mounted with a smooth one piece walnut stock.

Rating Definition:

Fair. Refinished with 20% dark blue finish remaining mixed with smooth brown and gray patina. The brass has been cleaned some time ago and is beginning to age. The stock has been sanded and refinished and remains very good with a few minor dents. The lock markings are readable. The action is very good.
