Description:

This is a late production U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Rifle that was manufactured in 1889. The rifle has a blued barrel, bands, lock plate, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate. The lock plate is stamped with the Eagle and shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" in two lines. The top of the breechblock is marked: "U.S./MODEL/1884" in three lines. The left side of the barrel is stamped with the Ordnance "V/P/ Eagle Head/P" proof and inspection marks just ahead of the receiver. The rifle has the Buffington rear sight that is adjustable for windage and elevation, and the leaf of the sight is stamped with an "R" (rifle). It is fitted with the correct low arch breechblock, three-click tumbler and grooved trigger. The heel of the buttplate is stamped with a "U.S.". The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of the script initials "SWP" over the date "1889" in a rectangle with flattened corners, with a encircled, script, "P" proof mark on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard finial. The breech block and barrel tang have a color casehardened finish.

Rating Definition:

Excellent like new unissued condition with 99% of the original blue finish overall, with just a hint of fading on the hammer and left side of the receiver. The breech block and barrel tang retain 98% of their brilliant case colors overall. The stock is also in excellent condition with a nice original medium brown color overall with an excellent oil finish with a crisp cartouche and P proof. Just a superior example of a late production 1884 trapdoor Springfield rifle.
