Description:

The is a rare example of one of only 841 Model 1898 Krag .22 caliber Gallery Practice rifles manufactured by Springfield in 1906-1907. The rifle has the distinctive altered receiver side, .22 caliber barrel with off-set chamber and bolt with auxiliary extractor for the .22 Long cartridge. The receiver is marked "U.S./MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY, 476477" followed by "CAL./.22" that was applied only to the Gallery Practice rifles. Ramped blade front sight and adjustable ladder rear sight graduated 1 to 20. Mounted with a smooth full walnut full stock with matching handguard with bayonet lug and stacking swivel on the front barrel band, crisp boxed "JFC" cartouche on the left side, and circled script "P" and the number "56" behind the trigger guard, sling swivels and steel buttplate with compartment.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle retains 85% original blue finish with thinning on the front barrel band and a smooth mottled gray patina on the receiver. The trigger guard has a smooth plum brown patina. The otherwise fine stock has a reglued minor crack and chip on the left side extending from the front of the trigger guard up to the left side plate. There are a few scattered minor dents and scratches. The markings are all crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
