Description:

This is an example of a French flintlock musket with a socket bayonet. The metal surfaces are finished bright and the stock is walnut. All action components are iron (note that it was common for the Model 1777 to have a brass flash pan, not iron as this musket has). There are three barrel bands with the front band having the wavy edge pattern found on Model 1777s. Retention springs on the rear and middle band are forward mounted and the front band spring is rear. The stock has a cheekrest cut into the buttstock’s inboard side which is another feature found on Model 1777s. The lock plate is marked with a star and "2T". The breech end of the barrel is marked "1/g" on the right side, "I/3[illegible]" on the top, and an unidentified stamp above the letter "B" on the left side. The barrel tang has an unidentified marking. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a "star/D" and "P[illegible]/43" on the right side and the number "39" above a Direction de Besancon "TB" cartouche on the left side. The socket bayonet is marked "AD". Consignor notes indentify this as a 1766/1777 model.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with the balance of metal surfaces showing a mottled gray patina, with some minor pitting overall, heavier on the buttplate. The undersized frizzen spring is detached, but included with the arm. The stock is very good with a couple of slivers of wood missing from the forearm and a number of minor handling marks.
