Description:

This is one of the best examples of an original DWM Model 1902 Luger carbine rig that we have ever offered for auction. This example is all original and in exceptional condition complete with an original, matching DWM factory numbered walnut shoulder stock. These carbines were an early attempt by DWM to a produce a light weight rifle substitute, to compete specifically with the Mauser Broomhandle carbines as well as all the other stocked pistols being produced in Europe at this time. The unique feature of this pistol is that they all have an 11 3/4 inch barrel, with the DWM factory hanger on the front end of the frame, that holds the small walnut forend which is fitted with a small spring accelerator mechanism inside. This small spring mechanism is necessary in functioning the carbine during the cycling phase, by helping to return the barrel/upper receiver into battery due to the additional weight of the longer barrel. All these 1902 Luger carbines have all the rare and desirable early features such as: the long old style frame, flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, and the recessed/flat breech bolt with the small spring extractor. The top of the chamber is blank and the front toggle has the DWM logo for "Deutsche Waffen und Munitions Fabriken". The full serial number (21832) is correctly marked on the underside of the frame extension, and the underside of the barrel. The last two digits of the serial number (32) are marked on the bottom of the recoil lug, side of the grip safety, trigger, takedown lever, side plate, breech bolt, and toggle assembly. The forend is also correctly numbered (32) inside the cutout for the frame extension and also matches the pistol. The grips are correctly numbered (32) on the back side of each grip panel. As noted the stock is also completely original and unaltered and has a hard-rubber type butt plate, original lower sling swivel with an original attaching iron that is numbered (32) on top. The magazine has a nickel plated body with the correct wood base. This carbine has a correct original factory rust blued finish with straw colors on the various small parts.

Rating Definition:

Excellent with 98% plus of the original DWM factory blue finish, with just a minor hint of blue wear on the very edge of the muzzle, and the very edges of the side plate hump, with just a hint of very minor brown specking on the front grip strap. The various small parts retain 95% of their straw colors overall, with most of the straw color loss on the face of the trigger. The three wood components, forend, pistol grips and shoulder stock all retain their original DWM factory finish with 98% of the varnish remaining on the forend and stock, with only minor handling marks, mostly on the lower rear edges of the stock. The forend, grips and grip area of the shoulder stock all have excellent plus sharp checkering overall with just a few minor nicks with a couple of very light pressure dings in the left grip. This pistol has all matching numbers to include the shoulder stock. The best aspect of this pistol is the overall attic condition on the various parts, i.e. there is that old original dried grease on the edges or sides of the toggle assembly, and in the area around the frame cutouts or milled areas. The grip screws are still perfect and unbuggered with that old dried grease around the lower edges of the grips. It would certainly appear that any wear on this pistol was simply due to cycling the action, and light collector handling. Truly an exceptionally nice all original, very early Model 1902 DWM Luger Carbine.
