This is an exceptional example of the first variation of the Number Three was dubbed the American, and bears many distinctions, including being the first cartridge revolver to be adopted by the United States military and has traditionally been associated with the American West. This is a Second Model American and is identified by the interlocking hammer and latch an a bump in the bottom of the frame just above the trigger. The top of the barrel rib is marked "+SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A PAT. JULY10. 60. JAN 17. FEB 17. JULY 11. 65 & AUG. 24. 69+". The serial number is marked on the butt with the matching assembly number "405" on the rear cylinder face and barrel latch. Blue finish with casehardened hammer and trigger guard, blade front and notch rear sights and fitted with smooth walnut grips.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 97% plus bright original high polish blue finish with a few areas on the barrel that have been cleaned with an abrasive. Most of the vivid original case colors on the hammer and trigger guard remain. The grips are excellent with some very slight wear on the lower edges and a few minor handling marks. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. An exceptional Smith & Wesson American Revolver!
