Description:

This is a exceptional example of a Second Model Winchester 1873 Carbine with Cody Firearms Museum letter that states this carbine was received in the Winchester warehouse on March 27, 1880, and shipped on May 20, 1886. The letter describes the carbine finish as "Full Nickel". The carbine has the Second Model screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The barrel has a block- mounted front sight located behind the upper barrel band and a First Style carbine, non-adjustable, two-leaf rear sight. A saddle ring is mounted on a staple of the left side of the frame. The carbine-style buttplate has a sliding trap door and the trap contains a jointed steel cleaning rod. All of the metal components have a nickel-plated finish the walnut forearm and well-figured stock have a varnish finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 20. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." between the lower barrel band and the rear sight. "MODEL 1873" is roll-stamped on the upper tang in fancy letters and the serial number, "48713" is roll-stamped in script letters on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The carbine retains 85% plus of the untouched original nickel-plated finish. The nickel-plating shows wear and minor flaking on contact points on the barrel, magazine, bands, frame and lever. The markings are crisp. The excellent stock and forearm retain most of the varnish finish and show only scattered light handling and storage wear. This is an exceptional example of a scarce full nickel-plated Winchester Second Model 1873 Carbine.
