Description:

This is an example of one of only approximately 1,200 Model 1842 pistols manufactured by Deringer possibly for the U.S. Navy. Of the 1,200 only about 300 of these pistols were actually accepted by the Navy. We are unsure if it is one of these examples, as we cannot find any inspectors' marks. The lock is marked "US/DERINGER/PHILADEL". There are no other visible markings on the pistol. The barrel was brown, with casehardened remaining parts. Brass barrel band, trigger guard and butt plate, button head swivel steel ramrod and mounted with a smooth walnut stock with a brass butt plate.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with flash pitting around the bolster. The brass has an aged patina. The stock is also very good with the varnish worn off of the left flat, a minor crack forward and to the rear of the lock and a number of small minor dents. The markings are crisp. The action is excellent.
