The top of the barrel at the breech is dated "1863" followed by "US" over the "V/ P" proofs with the eagle head proof just to the left. The left flat is marked "STEEL" and "H.S.L". The front sight is fixed and the rear sight is a three folding leaf type and there is a bayonet lug mounted on the right side of the barrel 3 inches back of the muzzle. The barrel is blue, casehardened lock and hammer with all brass mountings. Iron ramrod with tulip head. Mounted with a full one-piece straight grip walnut stock with a brass carbine style buttplate and patch box. The patch box is stamped with a "B" and the buttplate tang is stamped with "US" and an "L". The left stock flat is marked with crisp "BH" and "HDJ" cartouches. The patch box contains an extra percussion nipple and an iron worm.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 70% original dull blue finish with a smooth dark patina on the balance. The lock and hammer have a coppery tint and the brass components have an aged patina. The stock is also very fine with a few scattered minor pressure dents, dings and nicks. The edges of the flats are sharp and as noted the cartouches are crisp. All markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent. A totally untouched original Civil War Zouave Rifle!
