This is an example of a scarce Civil War contract Ball Carbine manufactured by Lamson & Co. with a total production of only approximately 1,002. The left side of the receiver is marked "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./JUNE.23.1863/MAR. 15, 1864.". There is a small "S" stamped on most of the components and a very small "GGS" stamped on the bottom of the forearm and top of the stock just ahead of the buttplate tang. Fixed blade front and two leaf folding rear sights and has a cleaning rod on the right side of the forearm and sling ring and bar on the left side of the receiver. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate and clear "GGS" cartouche on the left wrist.

Fine. The metal surfaces show patterns of case colors with the balance a smooth brown patina. The otherwise very fine wood has a vertical crack in the top right wrist with a small gouge on the left rear of the forearm. The cartouche markings are excellent. The action is excellent.
