Description:

Manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Co., of Providence, Rhode Island, from 1863-1865. The Burnside Carbine was one of the most successful and popular carbines issued to Federal cavalry regiments during the Civil War. This carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the frame that identifies it as a Fifth Model Carbine. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut with two boxed cartouches on the wrist. The barrel is fitted with a folding two-leaf rear sight with three apertures, graduated "1", "3" and "5". A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The top of the receiver is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864", "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE =R.I." is stamped on the lock plate behind the hammer and the matching serial number is stamped on the top of the receiver below the factory legend and on top of the breechblock. The right rear of the barrel is marked "B195", there is a "P" at the breech and single letter sub-inspector marks are stamped on some components.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown patina. The wood is very fine with "Folk Art Style" period crosshatching on the right side of the wrist between the lock and upper tang, and overall some scattered minor dings and dents. The cartouches are very fine. The markings are readable. The action is fine.
