Description:

U.S. Mounted Artillery or Dragoon pattern officer's saber marked "Sold By C & J.D. Wolfe New York" on the back of the blade. The saber was manufactured c. 1820-1840 and features a bird's head pommel with bone grip, reverse P hilt with down-turned finial and a 36-inch blade with single fuller. The saber is complete with a black leather scabbard with brass suspension bands and drag. The blade features a 16-inch fire blue panel with gold washed etching. The obverse of the blade is decorated at the ricasso with a floral spray with "Warranted" in a ribbon, the eagle and shield motif with "E. PLURIBUS/UNUM" in a ribbon and a floral spray. The reverse of the blade has similar gold-washed etching with a stand of arms with liberty cap replacing the eagle motif. The brass hilt is not decorated and the bone grip is cut with twelve horizontal grasping grooves. The brass scabbard throat has a frog stud in addition to the suspension ring mount.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The exceptional blade retains 85% plus of the original polish and bright niter blue finish. The first 12-inches of the blade has some scattered light pitting and age discoloration. Most of the niter blue and gold washed finish decoration remains and the engraving is sharp. The leather washer is missing from the hilt. The hilt shows light to moderate handling wear. The hilt has a dark aged patina and there are several small chips in the back of the bone grip. The leather scabbard is about good. Both suspension rings are missing and there is a break in the leather body immediately below the lower suspension band. The leather finish has flaked away around the suspension bands and break but is intact with scattered cracking elsewhere. The suspension bands and drag have an attractive aged patina. This is an attractive example of a U.S. Mounted Artillery or Dragoon officer's saber with extraordinary blade.
