Description:

29 3/4 inch straight blade with etched scroll and patriotic decoration on the sides. Gilt brass hilt, with an "EKB" monogram on the folding counter-guard, cut through oak leaf and American eagle designs, and a spiral ribbed ebony grip. Nickel finished scabbard, with cut-through designs on the fittings and the inscription "Presented to Capt. E.K.Buttrick/From his fellow Staff Officers/Sept. 23, 1865". Research suggests Captain Buttrick is Edward K. Buttrick, Captain of Company H of the 31st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and later in the war the Acting Assistant Adjutant-General for the 1st Division of General Hooker's 20th Army Corps.

Rating Definition:

Very good, with mild spotting and a gray patina on the blade, some light handling marks, and strong etching. A fine aged brass patina is visible on the high edges of the hilt, with strong gold in the protected areas and a few light scratches and dents on the grip. Scabbard is very good, with a dark, green tinted color to the fittings and a few dark spots on the main body.
