Description:

Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword with Solingen blade imported by W.H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia. The sword has a 31 inch slightly curved blade with spear point and two fullers. "IRON PROOF" is etched on the spine at the ricasso. The high quality blade is deeply etched with a stand of colors, military trophies, an eagle and shield, "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on a ribbon and scroll work on the obverse. The reverse of the blade is acid etched with military trophies, scrollwork, "US" and a stand of colors. The gold-plated brass hilt has a Phrygian helmet pommel with oak leaf borders, a ribbed knuckle bow slotted for a saber knot, counter guard with pierced floral designs and down-turned quillon with oak leaf decorations. The grip is covered with shark skin and wrapped with twisted wire. The sword has an iron scabbard favored by mounted officers with browned body and gold-plated brass throat, middle band and drag. The Model 1850 Foot Officers Sword was the regulation weapon for Infantry captains and lieutenants during the Civil War.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The blade has deep engraving but the original polish and frosted background have aged to a steel gray. The first 12 inches of the blade have been cleaned and show traces of light pitting. The brass hilt is in very good condition and retains about 40% of the gold plated finish in protected areas. The fishskin grip and wire wrap are excellent. The scarce mounted officers scabbard is very fine and retains 90% of the brown lacquer finish on the body and substantial amounts of gold-plating on the throat, middle band and drag. The scabbard body and drag are free from dents and show no significant wear. This is a fine example of the regulation Civil War infantry officer's sword.
