Description:

This is an example of one of the Civil War Sharps New Model Carbines that were converted post Civil War to fire the .50-70 Government center fire cartridge. This carbine has the three groove barrel. These carbines were completely refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and if needed the stocks were replaced with ones not having a patch box, which is the case with this example. The carbine has a brass front sight blade and carbine style Lawrence Patent marked rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The sling bar base is marked "H.H.H.", the left side of the lever latch has an "M" and the left rear of the barrel is marked with an "F" and "G.C" The address and New Model marking are not visible on top of the barrel. The lock is marked with the Sharps and Lawrence patent dates and the left side of the frame is marked with the Sharps patent marking with the serial number on the upper tang. Mounted with a smooth oil finished black walnut forearm and straight grip stock.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. Arsenal refurbished with 80% blue finish remaining on the barrel, (concentrated on the breech end), with a smooth brown on the balance. The frame has a smooth mottled brown patina with strong case colors in the loading port. The lock retains 98% case colors. The varnished wood shows only a few scattered minor pressure dents and dings. The lock and frame markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
