This is an early 20th Century Royal Navy Lieutenant uniform attributed to B. R. H. Ward. The Gieves tailcoat is composed of heavy, dark blue fabric with white accents on the collar and cuffs with gold lace around the edge of the collar and gold lace Lieutenant markings on the cuffs. The buttons have the King's crown over a fouled anchor. There is a black silk lining at the top with a white cloth lining on the tails. There is a Gieves label with "B.R.H.WARD.". There are a pair of dark blue trousers with a gold lace stripe running down both legs with a Gieves label marked to "B.R.H.WARD". With a storage tin for the coat and trousers marked on the lid "B.R.H. WARD./R.N.". There is a second storage tin lined in red velvet and marked "B.R.H. WARD/R.N." with a set of epaulettes, bicorn hat, sword belt and two pairs of white leather gloves. The epaulettes have buttons with the King's crown over a fouled anchor, a silvered embroidered fouled anchor and gold bullion fringe. There is black leather on the underside with dark blue padded fabric. The bicorn hat is composed of black velvet with black lace around the edge. There is a button with the King's crown over a fouled anchor with a twisted gold bullion decoration. There are gold bullion decorations in the folds. The sweat band is white leather with a "6 3/4" size label and the lining is white silk with a Gieves label. The sword belt has gold bullion around the outside edge and is backed with black leather with a Gieves gold embossed label. The hardware is gilt with a King's crown over a fouled anchor circled with a laurel wreath.

The coat is very good with some minor wear, some loose stitching on the collar and the gold lace has darkened with age. The trousers are very good and the gold lace has aged. Coat and trousers storage container is good with scattered scratches, dents and surface oxidation. The epaulettes are good with one embroidered anchor absent and the other loose. There is some torn fabric on the underside. The hat is very good with some minor wear and aging overall. The sweat band and lining have some stains. The belt is also very good with some cracked and worn leather. The gilt components have a bright appearance overall. The storage tin is good, with crazing, scratches, surface rust, stained lining and the epaulettes shelves are missing the retaining staples.
