Description:

This is an example of a Second Model (also known as the "Model 1863"), Maynard carbine that was manufactured circa 1860 to 1865, with approximately 20,000 total production. Among the Union cavalry regiments armed with these Maynards were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. The three line "MASS. ARMS CO." address is marked on the right front of the frame and four line "1851/1859" Maynard patent marking on the left side. 3 3/4 inches of the breech end of the barrel is octagon and the left side flat is marked with the single sub-inspectors mark "S". It is equipped with a pinched front sight and a three leaf folding rear sight. There is a saddle ring bar and ring mounted on the left side of the receiver. Mounted with a smooth walnut straight grip stock, without a forearm and iron carbine buttplate. The left side wrist is marked with two crisp boxed "JM" and "GWL" cartouches.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 85% original blue finish with areas of smooth plum patina. The remaining metal surfaces have mottled case colors with the balance a smooth mottled brownish patina. The stock is also very fine with a period lightly scratched "RN" on the right side and a few scratches and dings. The cartouches are crisp. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
