Description:

U.S. Contract Colt Cavalry Model Single Action revolver manufactured in 1890. The 4,000 cavalry Single Action revolvers manufactured by Colt for the government contracts signed on November 12, 1889 and September 19, 1890 were the last Single Action revolvers purchased by the U.S. Army. This revolver was sub-inspected by Rinaldo A. Carr (R.A.C.) and inspected by Captain Stanhope E. Blunt (S.E.B). The revolver has the standard military blue finish on the barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, hammer and loading gate are color casehardened. The screws and trigger are niter blue and the one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The revolver has the second style oval ejector rod head introduced at about serial number 113,000 and cavalry type hammer with bordered, elongated knurling on the spur and cone-shaped firing pin. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the elongated block address "COLT'S P.T. F. A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three-date/three-line patent marks followed by the "U.S." property mark. The sub-inspection mark "R.A.C" is stamped (1) on the underside of the barrel, (2) on the bottom of the frame above the serial number, (3) on the side of the cylinder and (4) on the right heel of grip. "P" proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the sub-inspection mark and on the side of the cylinder. "K" Colt inspection marks are stamped on the trigger guard, back strap, underside of the barrel behind the ejector housing stud and on the front of the ejector housing. "O" is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The full serial number, "132836" is stamped on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number, "2836" is stamped on the barrel beneath the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "1066". The lower left side of the grip is stamped with the date "1890" above Ordnance final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "SEB" enclosed in a rectangle with rounded ends. The Ordnance sub-inspection mark which consists of the script initials "RAC" within a rectangle with rounded ends is stamped on the lower right side of the grip.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver is in As-issued condition and retains 99% of the original military blue and color casehardened finish. The feathered polishing marks are very evident on either side of the front sight blade and on the right side of the barrel above the ejector housing stud. There is no significant finish wear on the barrel, ejector housing, trigger guard or back strap. The cylinder has light turn marks between the stops. The frame, hammer and loading gate have vivid case colors with no silvering or handling wear. All of the screws are excellent and the screw heads and trigger retain about 98% of the fiery niter blue finish. All of the markings on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap are crisp. The grip is excellent plus with all of the original oil finish and unhandled raised feathered grain. The "1890" date and Ordnance inspection marks are sharp. Wear is limited to several minor storage marks on the right side and left heel of the grip. The bore is mirror bright. The action functions perfectly. This is a stunning example of a late production Colt Cavalry Model Single Action revolver in virtually the same condition as when it left the Colt factory 122 years ago. This U.S. Contract Single Action revolver would be almost impossible to upgrade.
