Description:

This British officer's Second Boer War period cork helmet has thick puggaree wrappings and a leather chin strap. The six panel cork body is covered in khaki linen. Edge trim is bound with khaki fabric. A silver 17th Lancers skull helmet badge is centered above the puggaree folds. The inside of the helmet is lined in foil with a leather sweatband. The 17th Lancers returned to South Africa in 1900 for the Second Boer War and their most significant action was at the Battle of Elands River in 1901.

Rating Definition:

Good, the helmet exterior shows moderate staining. Most of the foil lining remains. The leather chin strap is supple. The stitching and puggaree wrappings are tight. The insignia appears to be original to the helmet. Overall a solid example of a rare Boer War period British officer's cork pith helmet.
