Description:

This is a pair of British Sudan campaign medals awarded to Pte. W. Kettle of the 21st Lancers who charged at Omdurman on September 2, 1898. Copies of British records confirm that Kettle received these two medals that are included in this lot and research provided by the consignor confirms that Kettle charged at Omdurman. In 1898 the 21st Lancers served in the Mahdist War in the Sudan where they fought at the Battle of Omdurman. For their actions members of the Regiment won three Victoria Crosses. The Battle of Omdurman was a British victory that demonstrated the superiority of a high trained and modern equipped European military defeating an outnumbered force equipped with outdated weaponry. The battle was a turning point in British efforts to re-conquer the Sudan. The battle is also noted for a young Winston Churchill charging with the cavalry. The medals are a Queen's Sudan Medal which is named to Kettle and a Khedive's Sudan Medal (1896-1908) with Khartoum clasp which is unnamed as issued. The medals are on a medal bar and are attached to a display board which has three 21st Lancer badges.

Rating Definition:

Fine with some minor handling marks and a backing added to the ribbons.
