Description:

Cased pair of percussion officer's pistols made by the famous London gunmaker Joseph Manton or his son. The pistols have part-round 62. caliber smoothbore barrels with flat tops. The barrels have silver bead front sights and are fitted with swivel mounted iron ramrods with flared tips. The barrels are brown and have silver bands inlaid at the breeches. The top and left barrel flats are engraved with foliate designs with engraved borders. "LONDON" is engraved on the top flat of each barrel. The casehardened barrel tangs have fixed rear sights and are decorated with fine foliate engraving. The pistols have casehardened flush-fitted lock plates with sliding bar safeties. The lock plates are engraved "MANTON" and decorated with engraved scalloped borders and delicate scrollwork. The hammer spurs are engraved with stylized sea serpent designs and the sides of the hammers are engraved with same scrollwork as the lock plates. The iron trigger guards have engraved pineapple-shaped finials and scrollwork with scalloped borders on the bows. The straight grain European walnut stocks are wedge fastened with rectangular nickel-silver wedge escutcheons. The bag-shaped grips are finely checkered. Rectangular silver thumb-pieces are inlaid on the grips behind the barrel tangs. The mahogany case has a flush-mounted folding handle inlaid in a brass plate in the lid. The case interior is lined with green felt and has seven compartments. Two of the compartments have wooden lids with ivory handles. A large reproduction Joseph Manton trade label is glued to the inside of the lid. Smaller oval labels that read "JOHN LORD & Co/MERCHANTS, LONDON" are located on the inside of each compartment lid. The case contains: (1) iron wrench, (2) iron single cavity round ball bullet mold with spruce cutter handle stamped "20" on one arm, (3) small tin of Goldmark percussion caps, (4) bottle shaped powder flask with brown lacquer body marked "SYKES" on the side, (5) ebony cleaning rod with brass tip, (6) five round lead bullets and (7) a key for the case. "Property/Dr. William Camar/Philadelphia" is written in pencil on the inside of one compartment lid.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel has been period refinished and retains nearly all of the smooth deep brown finish. The barrel finials, lock plate, hammer, trigger guard and ramrod have an even silver-gray patina. There is light flash pitting on the percussion nipple and bolster. The delicate engraving on the hammer, lock plate, trigger guard and tang is crisp and deep. The stock is very fine. The flat top checkering is crisp. The edges of the stock are sharp. Nearly all of the varnish finish remains. Wear is limited to some minor handling marks, primarily on the left stock flat. The case is very good. The case exterior shows only minor handling and storage marks. The interior is good. The lining is bright and clean. Wear is limited to several small moth holes in the lid and several minor tears in the lining from contact with hammer spurs or other pistol components. The edges of the center compartment are broken and the compartment shows signs of an amateur repair. The bullet mold, wrench and ramrod are all good. The powder flask retains about 60% of the original brown lacquer finish; most of the wear is concentrated on one side. The brass top and charge have an attractive patina and the spring retains about 50% of the fire blue finish. The cap tin is good.
