Description:

Cased pair of British back-lock saw handle dueling pistols made by Richardson of London. The pistols have .54 caliber, smooth bore, Damascus finished, octagon barrels. The barrels have brass bead front sights and have an under-rib with a single ramrod pipe. Two silver bands are inlaid on each barrel at the breech and "LONDON" is engraved on the top flat. The underside of one pistol barrel is stamped with Birmingham proofmarks, the number "1243" and "50". "P" is stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the breech plug. The pistols have wedge-fastened English walnut stocks with finely checkered grips. The stocks have German silver forend caps, tailpipes, wedge escutcheons, spur trigger guards and buttcaps. Each buttcap has a small hinged trap. The trigger guards and buttcaps are engraved with open English style scrollwork. The iron barrel tangs have fixed rear sights and are decorated with foliate engraving. The flush-fitted back-locks have a sliding bar safety. "RICHARDSON" is engraved in small letters on each lock plate. The lock plates are engraved with foliate designs and scalloped borders. The tops of the hammers are engraved with a sea serpent motif. Each pistol has an ebony ramrod with flared brass tip. The mahogany case has a brass escutcheon plate on the top and is lined with crimson felt. A Edward Whistler trade label is glued to the inside of the lid. The case has eight compartments and contains: (1) un-marked tin of percussion caps, (2) linen patches, (3) wooden ball screw with ebony tip, (4) bag-shaped copper powder flask with fixed charger, (5) brown lacquered tin percussion caps with "ELY BRO/LONDON" embossed on the lid, (6) wooden handle screw-driver, (7) iron single cavity round ball bullet mold with spruce cutter handles marked "32" and (8) three lead pistol balls.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The pistol retains most of the Damascus finish. Nearly all of the brown Damascus finish is present on the barrels and under ribs. The lock plate, hammer and barrel tang retain traces of the casehardened finish. There is moderate-heavy flash pitting on the percussion nipples, bolsters and adjacent areas of the hammer. The markings and engraving on the barrel, tang, lock and German silver furniture is crisp. The stock is very good with light-moderate handling wear. The flat faced checkering on the grips are also very good. The case exterior is very good with only scattered handling marks. The interior lining is good; the exposed fabric has faded and there are several tear in the bottom of the case from contact with the pistols. The label is a quality reproduction. The accessories show wear but remain good overall. This is a very good cased pair of British percussion dueling pistols.
