Description:

These medals were commissioned by His Royal Highness the Prince Regent in 1815. These medals were originally meant to be struck in gold and distributed to the allied sovereigns, their ministers and generals. Benedetto Pistrucci's design won out over Jon Flaxman's design and in August of 1819 Treasury authority was given to start work on the medal. The dies were not finished until 1849 due to disputes over the position of chief engraver, salary disputes and the complexity of having dies large enough to strike such a medal. The dies were composed of two parts with a ring that fit around the central die. By this time almost all of the primary recipients had passed away and no one was willing to risk damaging the dies during the hardening process. Gutta-percha impressions and electrotypes were finally produced a few years before Pistrucci died in 1855. This set is a silvered electrotype and is enclosed in a wooden octagon frame with a decorative floral edge. The medals are recessed into a red velvet background with a brass plaque.

Rating Definition:

Very good, the medals have a dark aged patina overall. The frame is good with a number of cracks and chips on the decorative floral band.
