Description:

This medal was issued by the Legislative Assembly of the Island of Vincent in the West Indies to the local militia and volunteers who took part in the suppression of the native uprising from 1772-1773. The Caribs had been encouraged to rebel against the English by the French settlers. A combined British and local force under the command of Major General Dalrymple campaigned against the Caribs who finally submitted on February 20, 1773. The obverse has the bust of George III in armour marked "GEORGIVS. III. MB. REX" and the reverse has Britannia offering an olive branch to a defeated Carib marked "PEACE AND PROSPERITY TO ST. VINCENTS/MDCCLXXIII". The silver medal has a red ribbon through the integral loop.

Rating Definition:

Fine with the silver having an attractive patina. Rare example of an early British campaign medal.
