Colt Model 1902 Sporting Automatic Pistol with factory letter. The letter states that this pistol was one of five shipped to the Dunham, Carrigan & Hayden Co., in San Francisco, California, on January 28, 1904. The letter describes the finish as "blue" and does not list the type of stocks. The pistol has the Colt high polish blue finish with color casehardened hammer. The pistol has grip serrations on the front of the slide, round profile rear sight, frame with rounded butt and a round spur hammer. The right side of the slide is roll-stamped "AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" in two lines. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped with the first style markings "BROWNING'S PATENT"/PAT'D APRIL 20. 1897/SEPTEMBER 9, 1903" in three lines followed by "COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in two lines and the circled Rampant Colt trademark. The serial number, "6661" is stamped on the left side of the frame above the trigger guard bow. The 7-shot magazine is blue and stamped "PAT'D SEPT.9.1884" on the bottom of the floor plate. The Model 1902 (Sporting) Automatic Pistol evolved from the Model 1900 Automatic Pistol. Colt manufactured 30,190 of these pistols between 1903 and 1908.

Excellent. The pistol retains 90% of the original high polish blue finish. There is minor edge wear on the front of the slide and scattered minor handling marks present on the slide and frame. The blue finish on the grip strap and back strap shows some handling wear. The hammer retains nearly all of the original color casehardened finish. The barrel retains 97% of the original blue finish. Most of the niter blue finish is present on the screws and small components. The markings on the frame and slide are crisp. The hard rubber grips have faded to an attractive brown patina and remain excellent. The magazine retains about 80% of the dull blue finish and is very good. This is a very fine example of a Colt Model 1902 (Sporting) Automatic pistol that would be an important addition to any advanced collection of Colt semi-automatic pistols.
