Description:

U.S. Model 1911 Automatic Pistol with frame manufactured by Colt in January-February 1919 and slide manufactured by the A.J. Savage Munitions Co. of San Diego, California in late 1918. The A.J. Savage company received an Ordnance Department contract for 100,000 Model 1911 Automatic Pistols on July 20, 1918. The contract was suspended on December 4, 1918 before Savage completed any Model 1911 pistols. Savage did complete a number of slides and other components before the contract was cancelled and some slides were reclaimed by the Ordnance Salvage Board and used for arsenal rebuilds following WWI. The left side of slide has the three line "COLTS PT.F.A.MFG. CO." patent markings followed by the Ordnance Corps "Shell and Flame" insignia with an encircled A.J. Savage "S" inside a shell. The "Eagle Head/S17" Ordnance final inspection mark is between the slide stop and the magazine release, with "G" on top of frame. Blue barrel with "HP" proof/inspection mark. The stocks are oil-finished checkered walnut. The slide and frame have a matching brush blue black finish that is identical to the finish found on late production Colt Model 1911 "Black Army" pistols. The WWI magazine has a two-tone finish.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The pistol retains 90% plus of the brush blue black finish. The top and sides of the slide have the flaking that is typical of expedient surface preparation found on late production Colt "Black Army" and Remington-UMC Model 1911 pistols. The frame retains 98% of the original blue finish. The barrel chamber shows minimal cycling wear. The stocks are in excellent condition with minimal handling wear. The finish on all of the pistol components shows similar minimal handling wear. The slide and frame have been together for many years and appear to be an original assembly or Ordnance overhaul from the early post-WWI period. This is an excellent example of a very late production Colt Model 1911 frame with A.J. Savage Munitions Co. slide.
