Description:

This is an example of a U.S. Navy Colt Model 1911 Automatic Pistol that was shipped to the Brooklyn Navy Yard as part of a lot of 1,000 pistols on October 25, 1912. The Navy received 7,000 Model 1911 pistols in 1912. The pistol has the military blue finish adopted on April 24, 1912, at serial number 2,401. The grips are checkered walnut with an oil finish. The pistol retains the original "keyhole" two-tone lanyard loop magazine. The pistol has the original rounded rear sight and short hammer. The right side of the slide is roll-stamped "MODEL OF 1911. U.S. NAVY". The opposite side of the slide is roll-stamped "PATENTED APR.20.1897/SEPT.9 1902. DEC. 19.1905. FEB.14. 1911" in two unequal lines followed by "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." in two lines. The encircled Rampant Colt trademark is stamped behind the left slide serrations. The serial number "NO 9242" is roll-stamped on the right side of the frame behind the slide stop hole. "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" is stamped in small letters on the left side of the frame in front of the trigger guard bow. The Ordnance final inspection mark consisting of the round monogram "WPG" is stamped on the left side of the frame between the trigger guard and the slide stop notch. The top of the frame is stamped with an "H" provisional inspection mark in front of the disconnector and "R" assembler's mark to the right of the disconnector. An "H" provisional inspection mark is stamped on the rear of the slide above the firing pin stop. The barrel has a blue finish. The top of the chamber is stamped with an "H" provisional inspection mark and a "P proof mark perpendicular to the axis of the bore. The letter "N" is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the lug.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The pistol retains 70% of the original blue finish. The two-tone lanyard loop magazine with "keyhole" back is correct for Model 1911 pistols in this serial number range. The pistol finish shows moderate wear with holster wear on the forward portion of the slide and lower frame and handling wear on the bottom of the trigger guard, grip strap, mainspring housing and grip safety. The top and sides of the slide and the sides of the frame have scattered minor handling marks. The worn portions of the pistol have a smooth gray/brown patina. The later production replacement barrel chamber retains 25% of the original blue finish. The markings on the slide and frame are sharp. The grips are very good overall; some of the checkering is slightly flattened from handling and the lower edges are rounded. The magazine retains most of the blue and two-tone finish. This is a very fine example of a first year production, U.S. Navy, Model 1911 Automatic Pistol
