Description:

29 3/4 inch single fuller blade, with etched decoration on each side, Meyer's New York address on the left ricasso, and "Rudy Vallee" in a panel on the right side of the blade. Gold washed hilt, with "USCG" and cut-through oak leaves on the guard, simulated rayskin grip, and a golden portapee with matching acorn. Black leather sheath, with the gilt fittings all numbered "21", and the inscription "PRESENTED BY THE OFFICERS/OF THE COAST GUARD BASE/AND CAPTAIN OF THE PORT/WILMINGTON, CALIF." on the rear of the throat, a black leather sword belt with brass buckle, a pair of sword hangers and a shoulder board for a Coast Guard Lieutenant. Born in 1901, Rudy Vallee spent 41 days in the United States Navy in 1917 before the authorities figured out he was a minor. Afterwards, he received a degree in Philosophy from Yale and pursued a career in music, helping to popularize the "crooner" style and recording songs including "As Time Goes By" and "Strangers in The Night", in addition to appearing in a number of films and television programs. During the Second World War, Vallee joined the Coast Guard as leader of the 11th District Band, achieving the rank of Lieutenant before being added to the inactive list.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with some minor handling marks overall, light spotting on the excellent blade, and a few stains on the hilt. The leather shows mild scuffing and cracks, with the front hanger torn. Light staining is visible on the shoulder board. A highly attractive United States Coast Guard Presentation Sword with Accoutrements.
