Description:

This shotgun was manufactured in 1946 (most likely as a riot gun) and has a single steel bead sight on the handguard/bayonet lug installed. The perforated handguard has a blue finish and is of the early style with six rows of holes. It is marked with a "W" on the left side and lacks the "PAT.APPL. FOR" marking typically found on WWI Model 1897 handguards. The handguard has the early thin wire sling swivel fitted above the bayonet lug. Choked cylinder and a 2 3/4 inch chamber. The top of the barrel is stamped with a small Ordnance "Shell and Flame" inspection mark just in front of the Winchester proofmark. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped with "U.S." followed by the "Shell and Flame" insignia below the ejection port. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester New Haven address and patent dates in two lines followed by "-WINCHESTER-/-TRADE MARK-" and "MODEL 12-12 GA-2 3/4 CHAM./CYL.". Oval "WP" proofmarks are stamped on the top of the barrel and top of the receiver. Mounted on an 18 groove ribbed forearm and smooth pistol grip stock with checkered hard rubber buttplate. The left side of the stock is stamped with a distinct "OG" and then a faint Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of the initials "W.B." in a rectangle above a faint 1/4-inch diameter Ordnance cartouche. Length of pull is 14 inches. With green canvas sling.

Rating Definition:

Refinished and assembled, 70% dull blue finish remaining with high edge wear, some light spots of pitting scattered handling marks. The wood is good as refinished with a 3/4 inch hairline crack in the left wrist, a 1 inch hairline crack on the bottom of the wrist and some light handling marks. The "W.B." cartouche is faint with an added "OG" cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
