It has a red/white/black checkered band of the regimental pattern and a silver and gilt regimental badge bearing the number "42" in the center with "NEMO ME IMPUNE LACESSIT" around it and a sphinx underneath. There is a scarlet feather or red hackle above the badge on the left side. The hat is supported by a wire framework and there is a maker's mark inside. With an Officer's glengary cap circa 1885. Blue wool with red wool pom. Silver star and St. Andrew cross, gilt garter circle surmounted with Victorian crown. Gilt sphinx beneath.
