Description:

Matthew Boulton struck this type of medal for the survivors of the battle of Trafalgar at his own expense. The medal was awarded in white metal but silver examples such as this one do exist. Silver medals were not awarded but were later ordered from Boulton or his descendants by officers. One side has the uniformed bust of Lord Nelson and marked around the edge "HORATIO VISCOUNT NELSON. R B DUKE OF BRONTE". The opposite side shows a battle scene with "ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY" along the top edge and "TRAFALGAR/OCT. 21. 1805" at the bottom. Above the battle scene is engraved "William Teague/Thunderer". The HMS Thunderer was a third rate ship of the line with 74 guns manufactured in 1783. This ship was the first to spot the Franco-Spanish fleet in the battle of Trafalgar. This medal is housed in a watch-glass with a 6 inch leather braided fob. There is a 1849 dated four pence coin on the fob.

Rating Definition:

Very good, the medal has a dark aged patina on the battle scene side and a bright appearance on the side with the bust. There is an area of roughness to the right of Lord Nelson's bust. The watch-glass is also very good with a dark aged patina on the silver and clear glass.
