This is a rare example of a Model 1906 "Republic Of Portugal Navy" contract Luger as produced by the DWM factory, with the large "R.P./Anchor" marked chamber area. This is the rare second variation, not to be confused with the earlier, "Royal Portuguese Navy" models. These specific pistols were produced or contracted for "after" the "Republic of Portugal" was formed in 1910. Previously many collectors thought these were just the earlier model that was remarked, but they are not, this is a distinct, separate variation and it is estimated that the total contract was for approximately 1,000 however only 2-3 examples have ever been reported to date. The serial numbers probably fall into the 1-1,000 serial number range with no letter suffix, with this example (638) falling about mid way in the production. The chamber is marked as noted above with the "DWM" logo on the front toggle. This model still has the 1906 style frame with grip safety, no stock lug, with polished lower safety area (with no markings) and "CARREGADA" marked extractor. The pistol is numbered in the commercial fashion with the full serial number on the front of the frame and underside of the barrel only with the last two digits of the serial number on the small parts. It is fitted with an unmarked nickel plated magazine with a commercial wooden base that is marked "Cal 9m/m".

Good with 40% of the arsenal rust blue finish still remaining which has dulled and browned out overall. The grip straps showing spotting and browning. The various small parts retain 40% of their straw colors overall. The grips are in good plus condition showing even honest wear across the tops of the checkering with a few minor handling marks or pressure dents. The pistol has all matching numbers except the firing pin, grips and magazine, all are correctly unnumbered. A very rare commercial contract Luger with less than a handful ever reported to date.
