Description:

This is a nice example of a very rare Remington revolving rifle in .46 rimfire caliber. This rifle is pictured on page 103 in Howard M. Madaus' "THE GUNS OF REMINGTON: HISTORIC FIREARMS SPANNING TWO CENTURIES". Consignor only knows of three .46 rimfire examples in existences. These rifles were built on the frame of the New Model Revolver series and had a slightly longer cylinder and a longer loading lever, with only about 1,000 manufactured. This rifle is fitted with a 24 inch full octagon barrel factory converted to the very rare .46 rimfire caliber and has the specially installed conversion cylinder numbered "124". The top barrel flat is marked "PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A./NEW MODEL" and the left side trigger guard shoulder is stamped "44". German silver blade front sight and a fixed "V" notch rear sight, casehardened frame and loading lever with the remaining surfaces blue. Mounted on a nicely figured smooth walnut straight grip stock with the correct German silver brass scroll type trigger guard with spur and two piece crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Good. The barrel has a smooth brown patina, showing some minor pitting with touch-up in some areas. The cylinder has a smooth artificial brown patina and the frame has a smooth brown patina showing some traces of original silvered out case colors. The trigger guard and buttplate retain 75% of the dull original silver. Stock has a repaired crack on the wrist and retains most of the professionally restored varnish with some light dings and scratches. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
