Description:

This is an example of a highly desirable and extremely scarce dueling or dragoon size percussion pistol with a 7 inch octagon rifled barrel manufactured by Henry Deringer of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deringer manufactured percussion pistols from the late 1830s to 1868. This pistol is marked "DERINGER/PHIA" on top of the barrel plug and on the lock plate. The lock plate, fish hammer, trigger guard, barrel tang and barrel plug feature a scroll engraving. The round trigger guard has a floral type finial. The pistol has a rare single set trigger. The barrel has a solid iron rib on the underside which has an iron ramrod pipe holding what appears to be a period replacement wooden ramrod. The stock features hand checkering in the grip area and a single barrel wedge. The barrel wedge escutcheons, lock plate screw escutcheon and escutcheon behind the barrel tang are non-engraved German silver of an ornate pattern.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 80% original brown finish. The German silver is fine. The remaining metal surfaces have an even aged gray patina. The stock is very fine with some minor handling marks and retaining most of the original varnish. Overall the checkering is crisp. Mechanically fine. A rarely obsurved high condition dragoon size Henry Deringer pistol that one would spend a longtime looking for a similar example.
