Description:

This is the only example of a deluxe Colt Model 1839 Revolving Carbine that was manufactured by Samuel Colt's Paterson, New Jersey, factory circa 1838-1841. The carbine has a highly figured Bird's Eye Maple stock with cheekpiece, checkered wrist and nickel-silver buttplate. The 2 1/2 inch round-back six-shot cylinder is elaborately roll-engraved with three oval panels that depict a hunting scene, a naval battle and a land battle. "COLT'S PATENT/PATENT ARMS MAN'Y/Patterson JERSEY" is boldly stamped between the oval panels and the balance of the cylinder body is roll-engraved with delicate scrollwork. The rifled part-round/part-beveled barrel has a factory loading lever with guide stud on the right side of the lug and a dovetail mounted fixed rear sight and pin front sight. The left side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped "- Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson, N.J.-Colt's Pt." with wavy lines and asterisks on either side of the marking. The frame has an iron scroll shaped trigger guard. The serial number "737" is located on all visible parts. Included with the carbine are: (1) unmarked "cross-pump" Model 1839 Paterson flask with two-piece horn body (shown on page 24 of COLT ACCOUTERMENTS by Robin J. Rapley), (2) Brass Paterson rifle capper which features the Rampant Colt, a Paterson revolving rifle and two crossed Paterson revolvers on the lid circled by "PATENT ARMS MANg Co-PATERSON: N.J.-COLTS PATENT" (Rapley C3, Page 56), and (3) Paterson Model 1839 Carbine .52 caliber, round ball bullet mold with three turned wooden handles (Rapley M#5, Page 42). Also included with the carbine is a small bronze Texas Longhorn trophy with a plaque engraved "GATHERING OF PATERSONS/Texas Gun Collectors Assn./2008".

Rating Definition:

Fine. The carbine is accompanied by a 1999 dated letter of evaluation from noted antique arms dealer and firearms consultant Herb Glass. The letter describes the carbine as "an authentic example, which has had some work and restoration". Glass states "The deluxe Bird's Eye Maple buttstock with German Silver buttplate, with its documented and well done wrist repair is certainly of the period and beautifully made in the Paterson style." The letter states that although the stock has no visible serial number, "it is very probable that the stock is original to this gun." Glass noted that while none of the Model 1839 Carbines were believed to have been rifled at the factory some carbines, like this example, were rifled during the period of their use. The letter states that the lower tang and attached parts and the wedge appear to have been refinished during the period of the gun's use and that the finish on these parts is very old. The letter further notes that the front and rear sights are replacements and that a wedge latch has been added to the right barrel lug. The barrel and cylinder have a very attractive gray-brown patina. The markings on the left side of the barrel lug are light but legible. The delicate roll-engraved panels and scrollwork on the cylinder remains fully visible. The flask and capper are original and remain fine. The bullet mold is rebrowned. This is a fine and well documented example of a Deluxe Paterson Model 1839 Carbine with scarce accessories.
