This is an extraordinary example of a Factory Cased Colt Model 1848 Pocket Revolver that was manufactured circa 1848-1849. The revolver is factory cased with the early Paterson style mahogany case with beveled lid and semi-recessed, non-partitioned interior lined with dark brown velvet. The case is complete with: (1) 100 cap tin of Ely percussion caps, (2) "COLTS PATENT", Model 1848/1849 Powder Flask with embossed eagle on both sides and fixed charger ("COLT ACCOUTERMENTS/1834-1911" by Robin Rapley, Page 84, F#22), (3) brass, double cavity, bullet mold for conical bullets and round balls marked "COLTS/PATENT'" across both blocks (Rapley, Page 124, M#17), (4) key and (5) blued, L-shaped, combination nipple wrench/screwdriver. An identical casing for a Baby Dragoon with a 6-inch barrel is shown on page 210 of "COLT ACCOUTERMENTS". Factory cased Baby Dragoon revolvers are rare. The revolver is the later style with loading lever and five-shot cylinder with rectangular slots, roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene. The barrel and cylinder are blue, the loading lever, hammer and frame are casehardened the trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated. The one-piece walnut grip has a high gloss varnished finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style legend "- ADDRESS SAML COLT/NEW-YORK CITY-" reading toward the breech. "COLTS/PATENT" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame. The full serial number "11920" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and the side of the cylinder. The cylinder pin and wedge are stamped with the partial serial number "920". All of the visible serial numbers match. The assembly number "45" is stamped on the loading lever and in the loading lever cut-out on the barrel.

Excellent. The revolver retains most of the original blue, casehardened and silver-plated finish. The case and accessories are all in excellent original condition. The barrel has nearly all of the blue finish intact, the area around the wedge slot is free of takedown marks and scratches and the barrel legend is crisp. The cylinder has nearly 100% of the "Stagecoach Holdup" scene, all of the safety pins are intact, the percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder have minimal flash pitting. The cylinder has a gray patina with traces of blue finish in protected areas. The loading lever, frame and hammer have 95% or more of the case-hardened finish with strong case colors, wear is limited to some light flash pitting on the sides of the hammer. The silver plated trigger guard and back strap are tarnished but the silver plating shows minimal wear. The grip is excellent and retains more than 95% of the original piano-finish varnish. The exterior of the mahogany case is very good-excellent with only a few minor handling marks. The velvet lining is excellent with no fading or stains, minimal compression marks and only one tiny tear in the fabric from contact with the cone front sight. The cap tin is excellent with most of the brown japanned finish and nearly all of the green paper label intact. The powder flask is excellent; 95% or more of the brown lacquer finish remains on the body, all of niter blue finish is on the spring and the body is free from dents and scratches. The brass bullet mold has a mellow unpolished patina with sharp marks and minimal handling wear. The screw-driver is excellent with 90% of the blue finish intact. This is an excellent and completely original example of a rare, factory cased Colt Model 1848 Pocket Revolver.
