Description:

Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy revolver manufactured in 1861. The revolver has bold New York style Germanic scroll engraving on a punch-dot background on the sides of the barrel, frame, back strap and trigger guard. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line in a panel with engraved double-line borders. The top and sides of the barrel surrounding the panel are engraved with double-line flourishes. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". The rebated portions of the cylinder are decorated with engraved scallop and dot borders. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the "COLTS/PATENT" marking in two lines in a raised oval panel surrounded by scrollwork. The bottom of the barrel lug and the frame ahead of the trigger guard are not engraved. The hammer has bordered knurling on the spur but has no engraving. The full serial number, "8001" is stamped on the wedge, cylinder arbor pin, bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The special Colt factory markings for engraved and special finish arms (usually an "E", "I" or "P" typically stamped above or below the serial number on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap) are not present on this revolver. The revolver has a one-piece ivory grip. The revolver is complete with a mahogany case with five compartments lined with red felt. The case contains: a 250 cap tin of percussion caps for Colt belt and holster pistols with a green paper Eley Bros label and black japanned body, a blued iron straight leg double cavity bullet mold with "COLTS/PATENT" on the sprue cutter and "36B" on the right block, an L-shaped combination screw-driver/nipple wrench with blue finish, an 1848/1849 Pocket Model powder flask with fixed charger that features an embossed eagle with a revolver in its left talon on both sides of the flask but lacks the "COLTS/PATENT" markings, case key and assorted .36 caliber lead balls and conical bullets.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver retains 30% of the original silver-plated finish on the brass trigger guard and traces of casehardened finish on the loading lever. The balance of the barrel, cylinder, loading lever, frame, hammer and back strap have a silver-gray patina with traces of age discoloration. The cylinder has half of the Stagecoach Holdup scene intact; the safety pins are battered and the percussion nipples have moderate flash pitting. The engraving on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and back strap is crisp. The ivory grip is fine with some age shrinkage and discoloration and two minor, hair-line age cracks on the butt. The case exterior is good and has a repaired crack that runs across the top of the lid. The relined interior is good. The red velvet lining is faded and there are oil stains from contact with the revolver cylinder. The cap tin and bullet mold are both fine. The screw-driver has moderate finish wear and is good. The powder flask is good with an untouched patina and some minor age spots.
