Description:

One of approximately 310 manufactured circa late 1880s on contract order for the Australian Government. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the two line address/patent dates and the matching serial number is marked on the butt, rear face of the cylinder, barrel latch and barrel. Pinned blade front and notch rear sights, nickel finish with casehardened hammer and trigger guard and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips with "S&W" logo at the top. Complete with a walnut shoulder stock with nickel hardware and checkered hard rubber buttplate. The lower tang is numbered "23267". The accompanying factory letter verifies 44 S&W caliber, 6 1/2 inch barrel, nickel finish, checkered black hard rubber grips and that it was shipped to McLean Brothers & Riggs, New York City, N.Y. and Adelaide, Australia on January 31, 1888. The letter further states that the shoulder stock number 23267 was shipped to the same distributor in September of 1886. The distributor supplied this model to the Australian Government and it was Roy Jinks' opinion that the stock was mixed up in that country. It has been observed that Australian guns and stocks used in Western Australia will lack broad arrow proofs. The revolver comes with its original brown leather double flap holster for the revolver stamped with a broad arrow proof over "8" and a brown leather case for the stock

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 98% original polished nickel finish with some scattered minor scratches and dings overall. The hammer retains most of the original case colors on the sides with a smooth gray patina on the balance and the trigger guard shows strong original case colors in protected areas with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The grips are very good with a few minor dings on the bottom edges and crisp checkering. The shoulder stock is excellent with 97% original polished nickel on the attaching iron with a few small areas of flaking and some areas beginning to frost. The wood shows a few minor dents and handling marks and the buttplate is excellent. The revolver holster is good with some flex cracking and some normal usage wear. The stock case is also good with some moderate wear around the securing hole, some age cracking and minor scuffs. A rare, very fine complete Australian rig.
