Description:

This is one of 30 New Model 3 Revolvers manufactured with a 6 1/2 inch barrel ordered by the Australian government, circa 1881. The included factory letter confirms the 6 1/2 inch barrel length, nickel finish and checkered hard rubber grips. The revolver was shipped on December 14, 1881 to M.W. Robinson, New York City, Smith & Wesson's largest distributor. The letter goes on to state that shipment was ordered through Mr. Robinson for the Australian government and was part of shipment containing 250 revolvers with 7 inch barrels and 30 revolvers, such as this one, with 6 1/2 inch barrels. The revolvers were delivered to Winchester Arms. Co. to be put with other guns for shipment to Australia. The more common yet still scarce "Australian" contract guns were shipped with 7 inch barel, stock and holster and were shipped in two parts, the first shipment contained 250 revolvers so it would be safe to assure that all 30 Colonial Police guns went in the first shipment. The top of the barrel rib has the two line address/patent dates marking with matching serial number on the butt, cylinder, latch and barrel. The revolver is equipped with pinned blade front and notch rear sights with casehardened hammer and trigger guard. Fitted with checkered S&W monogram grips. Accompanied by its original brown leather flap holster which is stamped with a broad arrow on the inside of the flap.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 60% original nickel finish with the balance a smooth brown and gray patina. The trigger guard and hammer retain traces of original case colors. There are a few areas of minor pitting. The grips are excellent with limited minor handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The holster is good with some age flexing. A piece of black leather has been added to the back and shows overall age cracking. The stitching is tight.
