Description:

.This is a beautiful example of an original, highly desirable, WWII J. P. Sauer and Son M30 Nazi Luftwaffe Survival Drilling, that is in just phenomenal near new condition. The M30 Drilling was standard issue to Luftwaffe bomber crews in North Africa and the Mediterranean Theater from 1941-43 that provided them with a high quality survival rifle in the event of a forced landing. They are a three-barreled drilling/combination gun; double barrel 12 gauge shotgun, over a 9.3X74R rifle barrel. These Luftwaffe drillings were all hand fitted and exhibit the most beautiful pre-war workmanship that consists of a high polish rust blue barrel finish with a beautiful color casehardening finish on the receiver, trigger guard, forend latching mechanism and grip cap, with a select grade of European walnut stock and forend, all typical of the J. P. Sauer and Son factory. The top of the receiver tang has a sliding barrel selector catch, so that when the rifle barrel is selected the rear rifle sight is raised and engages the forward trigger for firing the rifle barrel. The sides and under side of the receiver, trigger guard, screw heads and forend attaching iron have all been beautifully factory engraved with a diminutive high quality scroll pattern. The bottom of the rear barrel lug has a single "Eagle/2" Luftwaffe acceptance mark, along with the Commercial "Eagle/N" proof marks, on the underside of each barrel. In addition each barrel is stamped with the bore and gauge/caliber markings, "12/65" and is dated "8-41" for the month and year of manufacture. Additionally the shotgun and rifle barrels are all marked: "KRUPP-LAUFSTAHL", with serial number "336355" stamped on the underside of the rifle barrel. The right rear breech area of the shotgun barrel also has the larger "Luftwaffe Eagle" Luftwaffe mark. The barrel has a matted rib with brass bead front sight. These drillings have a Greener type cross-bolt receiver/action with a side mounted safety lever. The top left edge of the receiver rail and the rear of the bottom tang are marked with serial number "336355" with the intertwined "SS" proof for the Sauer & Son factory along with the Commercial Eagle "N" firing proof on the right side of the receiver. Both sides of the receiver are marked "J.P. SAUER & SOHN SUHL" with a larger intertwined "SS" logo on the underside of the receiver. The stock and forend are both made from select grade European walnut and both have a beautifully executed, hand checkering on the pistol grip and sides of the forend. The stock has the typical, small European oval cheekpiece with a color casehardened grip cap and is fitted with a black plastic serrated buttplate that has the intertwined "SS" logo of the Sauer & Son factory in the center. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with a large prominent Luftwaffe "Eagle/Swastika" insignia. The forend as noted is also a select grade of European walnut, beautifully hand checkered on both sides, that also features a hand rubbed oiled finish. The partial serial number, "6355" is stamped on the attaching iron inside of the forearm. The drilling is packed in an aluminum carrying case that has the gray/green painted exterior. The inside lid of the carrying case contains a black stenciled listing of the original contents of the case. The case is divided into compartments for the drilling and this example has various accessories as follows: two full boxes (10 rds) of DWM, 9.3 X 72R rifle ammunition; an original leather sling; the original small black cardboard box that contains the three piece wooden cleaning rod, with four different rifle bore brushes/cloth mops; and three different shotgun bore mops/bore brushes and two cut-off piece of an Aviators high altitude fleece-lined jacket. Also included is an interesting, small clear glass oil bottle, that is marked "WAFFEN-OEL/Mapox//WUNDOL". This lot is complete with an original M30 Drilling owners/operators manual as published and dated June 1941. In additon to the original test target numbered to the gun!. Complete with the original capture papers from a Tech/5 dated May 1945.

Rating Definition:

Exceptional all original condition with 98% plus of the original blue finish overall. The gun shows very minor wear on the edges and high spots overall with a couple of very minor old dark surface rust areas on both sides of the shotgun barrels from sitting in the case. The various color case hardened parts all retain 98% of their vivid original case colors, just starting to show some lacquer missing on the lower edges of the receiver and the rear of the tang. The stock and forend are excellent with only a few minor handling marks with a very deep and prominent Luftwaffe Eagle on the right side. The case and various accessories are all excellent plus with 90% of the original Luftwaffe blue/gray paint on the outside of the metal case. Just an exceptional, high condition Luftwaffe M30 Drilling rifle with the most accessories we ever offered at auction.
