Description:

This is a very fine example of a late 1930s U.S. Springfield M1903A1 National Match rifle as manufactured in 1936. The top of the receiver is marked "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903/1480915" and the barrel is marked "SA/Ordnance Shell and Flame Insignia/12-36". The muzzle of the barrel is stamped with the distinctive "Star-Gauge" mark and the top of the barrel has the star-gauge number "C/336" underneath the hand guard. The left side of the "C" stock is stamped with the boxed "SA/SPG" cartouche with a single circled "P" proofmark in the pistol grip area, however the underside of the stock is not stamped with a rifle serial number, nor a drawing number. The rifle has the correct style, "N.S." marked bolt that still retains it's original Arsenal milling, in the white finish, that is unnumbered and carries a small letter "F" mark on the underside of the bolt handle. It has all the correct milled components, trigger guard, floor plate and barrel bands and has the correct style rear sight graduated from 200-2,800 with no 2,850 yard notch on the end. The magazine cutoff has the correct bright-polished face on the, "ON" side, with the other side still partially blackened out. The rifle is fitted with a an original "P.J.O'HARE" blackened-brass muzzle cover.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall with 85% of the original parkerized finish remaining overall with slight wear on the barrel bands, with the exposed finish on the trigger guard and floor plate worn off. As noted the bolt still retains it's original bright-polished finish. The stock and handguard are both very good with clear cartouche and proofs with only minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the underside of the front forend and rear area of the stock. A nice example of a early 1930s Springfield Armory, National Match rifle
