Description:

According to data from the Cody Firearms Museum (letter included), this rifle arrived at the warehouse September 16,1897, and was shipped the next day on September 17, 1897, in the following configuration: rifle, 45/70 caliber, octagon barrel, plain trigger and a checkered pistol grip stock. It was later returned for work on 31 August 1899, reason unknown. With a bead accented dovetail blade front and semi-buckhorn rear sights with the two line barrel address and "45-70" on the top flat. A short range peep sight is installed on the upper tang of the frame with a casehardened hammer and lever. Checkered fancy walnut pistol grip stock with a metal forearm tip, hard rubber Winchester gripcap and a smooth buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good as partially refinished, with traces of the original blue finish, concentrated on the protected areas of the barrel and magazine, with a mixed brown and gray patina overall, mild spotting and handling marks. The frame is partially polished with traces of case color on the hammer and lever with a refinished loading gate. The rear sight is a refinished replacement. Stock is refinished with mild pressure dents, sharp re-cut checkering and attractive, feathered grain. Mechanically excellent.
