Description:

This rifle was manufactured in 1887, the second year of production. The top flat of the barrel has been engraved with a small flourish of floral scroll and geometric design to the right of the barrel marking with an engraved monogram of an "F" intertwined with an "M" to the left of the barrel marking. There is a German silver blade front sight and an elevation adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight. The top tang is marked "-Model 1886-" and the patent dates are marked on the lower tang along with the serial number. Mounted on a smooth walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with smooth curved steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very good, the barrel has 40% of the thinning original blue finish on the barrel which has mostly turned to a brown patina with some scattered minor pin point pitting. The magazine tube has a gray/brown patina. The bolt retains 90% bright original blue finish with some minor pitting. The receiver and other casehardened components have mostly a silver patina, some scattered minor pitting, some brown patina and a few spots of removed pitting on the upper left side of the receiver. The buttplate has areas of oxidation and minor pitting. The lightly sanded refinished wood is also very good with a coat of varnish applied sometime in the past over a number of scattered minor scratches and dings and there are a few repaired cracks towards the rear of the upper and lower tang. Mechanically fine.
