Description:

Manufactured from 1861 to 1863. The barrel is stamped "D. MOORE PATENT SEPT. 18, 1860" on the top flat. The frame has a scroll engraving with star burst patterns on the butt and trigger guard. The back strap has an engraved accent at the top and a wedge of scroll engraving at the bottom with the inscription "Nim Colvin 4th Ky." At the time of this description, it is believed that the inscriptions refers to Nimrod Colvin of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry (CSA). In the memoir KENTUCKY CAVALIERS IN DIXIE: REMINISCENCES OF A CONFEDERATE CAVALRYMAN (the book is included in this lot), author George Dallas Mosgrove provided a muster roll of the 4th Kentucky Cavalry and Nimrod Colvin is listed under Company D (page 27). The 4th Kentucky Cavalry was mustered into service in October 1862 and disbanded in the spring of 1865. The Confederate cavalry regiment was involved in conflicts in Tennessee and Kentucky and later participated in actions taken in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Other research provided by the consignor confirms that Nimrod Colvin was a private with the 4th Kentucky Cavalry, Company D. Complete with a contemporary custom case for the pair of revolvers.

Rating Definition:

Refinished. The barrel and cylinder retain 97% of the blue finish. The brass components retain half of the silver plating with a crisp engraving. The grip is fine with a couple missing minor chips at the bottom, high edge wear and some scattered minor handling marks. Missing ejector rod. Case is fair. Mechanically fine.

Fine. The revolver has a smooth gray patina with the barrel retaining 40% original blue finish. The brass components retain 60% original silver plating with a crisp engraving. The grip is very good with high edge wear, a couple minor gouges and some minor handling marks. Missing ejector rod. Action needs work as cylinder does not rotate when action is cycled.
