Description:

One of approximately 1,000 factory cut for a shoulder stock. Identical to American Models except for the barrel address and chambered for the 44 S&W Russian rather than the 44 American. Smith & Wesson manufactured a total of 60,638 3rd Model Russians between 1874 and 1878. The Third Model Russian was manufactured with a 6 1/2 inch barrel. The included factory letter for this revolver confirms the caliber, barrel length, nickel finish, and smooth walnut grips. The commercial revolver was shipped on November 27, 1877 to M.W. Robinson, New York City, Smith & Wesson's largest distributor. The revolver was part of a shipment that included 15 revolvers in blue, 3 revolvers in nickel and 2 extension stocks. The top of the rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD. MASS. U.S.A. PAT. JULY 10.60. JAN. 17. FEB. 17. JULY. 11 65 & AUG. 24. 69. RUSSIAN MODEL" as seen on these revolvers in the serial number range of 39,000-53,5000. Matching assembly number "367" on the butt under the grip, barrel, cylinder and barrel latch. The matching serial number appears on the inside of the right grip panel and on the butt. The serial number on the butt is only partially visible due to the cuts for the stock. Integral blade front sight with notched rear sight on barrel latch. Nickel with casehardened hammer and trigger guard and fitted with smooth oiled walnut grips. The revolver is cut for a shoulder stock and is complete with a detachable stock. The stock is unmarked and the attaching hardware and buttplate are iron. Around 1,000 2nd and 3rd Model Russians were factory cut for a shoulder stock making this example a rare Smith & Wesson Model Russian.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The revolver retains 90% frosted original nickel finish with speckling of patina. The hammer and trigger guard retain traces of original case colors. The grips are excellent with some minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The stock is fine showing minor pitting on the iron components which have a smooth gray patina. The wood of the stock shows an area of chipping near the buttplate and some minor handling marks. One of the rarest of all Russian variations!
