This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1886 rifle that was manufactured in 1888. The rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum. The rifle has a blue full octagon barrel, half magazine, bolt and loading gate. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate have a color casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a high polish varnish finish. The rifle has a special order Winchester adjustable folding leaf rear sight and a special order "Winchester Express" front sight with colored bead. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "38-56 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat just in front of the receiver. The designation "-MODEL 1886-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The lower tang is roll-stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the script serial number "23906".

Excellent. The rifle retains 98% of the original blue and color casehardened finish. Virtually all of the original blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. The barrel markings are crisp. The bolt and loading gate have nearly all of the bright blue finish intact. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, and buttplate have fiery case colors with very minimal finish wear. The case colors on the lever and of the top tang are more subdued but show no wear. The stock and forearm are both in excellent condition and retain nearly all of the high polish varnish finish. Wear is limited to several very minor storage marks. This is an exceptional example of an early production Model 1886 rifle with special order front and rear sights that shows almost no handling wear. This exceptional rifle would be a worthy addition to the finest Winchester collection.
