Rare, Winchester Model 1886 Full Stock, Saddle Ring, Carbine in the Scarce 40-82 WCF Caliber

This rare Winchester Model 1886 "Long Musket Forearm Style" Carbine was manufactured in 1886 and chambered for the scarce .40-82 W.C.F. cartridge. This first year production carbine has the distinctive full length forearm with Model 1876 style forearm cap and spring fastened lower barrel band. The lower barrel band and stock have loops for detachable sling swivels. The 22 inch barrel has a block mounted front sight with steel blade and a folding leaf rear sight marked "1873" and graduated to 800 yards (the designation "1873" on the sight refers to the year of introduction of the sight and not the model of the rifle; this is the correct sight for a Model 1886 carbine with full-length forearm). The exposed underside of the barrel, directly in front of the forend-cap, is stamped with the number "119249", the purpose or significance is unknown. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The stock has a carbine style buttplate. The barrel, barrel bands, bolt and loading gate are blue and the receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate are color casehardened. The straight grain black walnut stock and full-length forearm are oil finished. An identical caliber .40-82 W.C.F. Model 1886 full stock carbine, serial number "14105" is illustrated and described on page 308 of "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis. Madis notes that all Model 1886 carbines are scarce and that only a few early production Model 1886 carbines were manufactured with full-length forearms. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U S. A-" in two lines with arrows on either end of the marking. The caliber designation "40-82/W.C.F." is stamped in two lines on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "-MODEL 1886-". The lower receiver tang is roll-stamped with the "1884/1885" patent markings in two lines behind the trigger and the the serial number, "14110" in script letters ahead of the rear tang screw.

ConditionVery fine. The barrel, forearm cap, barrel bands, bolt and loading gate have 70% of the faded blue finish intact; wear is limited to some edge wear on the forearm cap and barrel band. There is half of the case colors remaining on the receiver with light-moderate handling wear; the contact points on the upper and lower receiver have a silver patina. The casehardened finish on the sides of the receiver and upper tang is thin but has visible case colors. An additional non-factory filler screw is present rear of the hammer. Most of the casehardened finish is present on the hammer and lever. The buttplate has a gray patina with traces of case color and some light pitting and age discoloration. The markings on the barrel and receiver are crisp. The buttstock and full length forearm are both fine and have been professionally sanded and reoiled. This is a rare example of a first year production Model 1886 Carbine with full-length forearm chambered for the scarce .40-82 W.C.F. cartridge.
