Produced at an unknown date, this is a fine single shot percussion sporting rifle built around Gilbert Smith's breechloading, break action frame design, with the signature hinged barrel, spring latch on the top flat and brass lifter inside the trigger guard. Fitted with a dovetail slot for a front sight and a 3-leaf rear sight, and marked "GILBERT SMITH'S/PATENT 1857/POULTNEY & TRIMBLE/BALTIMORE, MD." on the left side of the frame, crossing over the side plate. Attractive checkered straight wrist stock, with a German silver tip and knuckle on the forearm, "1909-57" on the left side of the buttstock, and a smooth buttplate.

Very good. A strong brown patina is showing on the barrel, with minor pitting near the muzzle and light handling marks overall. Traces of the original casehardened pattern are visible on the frame, having silvered out overall. The lower edge of the side plate is raised slightly. Stock is also very good, with a thin crack in the left rear of the forearm and scattered mild dents. Mechanically excellent.
